Geneva Lake (often marketed as Lake Geneva) is a deep inland lake in Walworth County, Wisconsin, and a long-standing weekend destination for Chicago boaters who want protected water, shoreline towns, and a different pace than Lake Michigan. Public access is community-managed: villages and towns publish their own launch pages, fee schedules, and parking rules rather than a single statewide marina authority.
The Village of Fontana maintains a public boat launch on Lake Avenue and publishes resident and non-resident launch fee tables on its official site. The launch is described as open 24 hours, with an honor box when staff are not present. Other lakeside communities advertise launches as well; treat each municipality’s page as authoritative for that ramp, and do not assume Fontana’s fees apply elsewhere.
Because Geneva Lake is inland and heavily used in summer, congestion at ramps and limited trailer parking are the practical bottlenecks — not open-water fetch. Planning an early launch, confirming payment methods, and reading each village’s current schedule matters more than memorizing a single “Lake Geneva marina” brand.
From Chicago, the drive is typically under two hours depending on traffic, which makes day trips realistic when Michigan is blown out. Still, inland lakes have their own hazards: thunderstorms, crowded channels, and local no-wake rules.
